More than 22 years ago, Dr. Sanguan Nittayarumphong’s pioneering vision brought the Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS) to life, establishing a foundation for universal health coverage in Thailand. This system has since evolved to meet the health needs of millions and address health inequities. The National Health Security Office (NHSO) continues to carry forward this legacy, striving to ensure accessible, equitable healthcare for all.
This year’s book launch, Unveiling the Legacy of Thailand's Universal Coverage Scheme and 37 Years on the Samphan Path: A Journey of Development and Public Policy Transformation, pays tribute to the commitment and resilience of Thailand’s health advocates. Authored by Dr. Vichai Chokevivat, the two books featured in this event—The History of Thailand's Universal Coverage Scheme, which traces the establishment and milestones of UCS, and On the Sampran Path: The Process of Development and Driving Public Policies, which documents the impactful role of the Sampran Group—offer a comprehensive view of Thailand’s health policy journey. As an incubator for innovative thinking, the Sampran Group played a key role in promoting the “Right View” and fostering knowledge-driven reforms that have shaped Thailand’s public health landscape.
This event will provide an invaluable opportunity to reflect on the lessons learned from Thailand’s health policy evolution and to inspire new approaches in health system reforms. Through stories of struggle, collaboration, and triumph, Dr. Vichai’s works reveal the enduring values of inclusivity and resilience, celebrating Thailand’s journey and its ongoing commitment to health equity
