Hanna Barakat is a Palestinian-American researcher in Human-Computer Interaction and Science & Technology Studies. Her research focuses on how emerging technologies perpetuate systemic harm and how communities in the Global Majority creatively leverage technology to build decentralized networks.
She has a diverse background conducting community-centered research in tech start-ups and academic institutions like the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems. She has collaborated with civil society organizations like the National Domestic Workers Alliance to center low-wage workers' voices in AI development, and the Mozilla Foundation to debunk myths around open-source AI models. Her research has been featured in top journals like CSCW, ICWSM, and venues like Tech Policy Press and Columbia Univeristy’s Logic(s).
Hanna graduated with honors from Brown University, where her research on Palestinian crowdsourced safety networks received the International and Public Affairs Outstanding Thesis Award. She is also a competitive runner who represented Palestine in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, where she set the Palestinian national record in the 100-meter sprint.
